4 Simple Ways to Actively Follow Jesus

4 Simple Ways to Actively Follow Jesus

By Rob Wiltshire

When God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, he accepted a position of influence, not affluence. Although he was being asked to lead a large number of people, Moses realised he must also become a follower himself.

To do that, he had to spend time following the presence of God....

Like Moses we too have to be diligent in putting aside time to spend in God's Presence, to be followers of His Presence.

Whether that looks like putting on some worship music, reading your bible or sitting down with a cup of coffee and talking to God.  It's important that we are positioning ourselves for success, not failure, by making His Presence a priority in our lives.

The question I have for us today is..."What are you doing today to be an active follower of Jesus?"

4 SIMPLE WAYS TO ACTIVELY FOLLOW JESUS

1.  PRAY FOR SOMETHING THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE.

How safe are your prayers?  Are you praying for something that’s bigger than your ability, that by default draws you close to Jesus?  Are you praying for things that you can make happen, or things that need Jesus to turn up or they aren’t going to take place?

Pray for something bigger than you.

2.  SERVE

But I can’t, we are in lock down.

Well here’s some ideas.  Serve your neighbour by cooking them a meal, mowing their lawns, weeding their garden, etc.

In the church world guess what we need?  People who embrace technology.  Video editors, serial Facebook posters, camera operators, people willing to connect with others via Social Means both during Online Services and during the week, and a whole lot more.

3.  GIVE.

You can’t be an active follower of Jesus and not give.  The two just simply go hand in hand.

I love how Jesus say’s in Matthew 6:21 “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

What it is not saying is that you give every single cent to the desires of your heart.  Rather it’s saying that the desires of your heart will be revealed by your giving.  Meaning, you will give towards what your passionate about.

4.  CONFESS.

Yep I said it; “confess.” None of us are perfect, and none of us are above needing to apologise to God for our choices.  Why, simply because we all sin?

Psalm 139

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

How many of us pray a prayer like that?  “Search me…” “Point out anything that offends you….” And “lead me.”

Meaning this, show me what’s in my life I need to be allowing you to deal with.  So I can confess it and do away with it.

Being an active follower of Jesus isn’t rocket science. It’s just deliberately taking simple steps towards allowing Jesus to lead and navigate your life.
